Salary range for this role is $50,000 - $56,000 per year depending on relevant education, experience, and licensure.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Education: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required.
  2. Licensure: Current appropriate Ohio Department of Education license for area of specialty. Music Therapy licensure from the Certification Board for Music Therapists preferred.
  3. Skill/Competencies:
    1. Basic knowledge of child and adolescent development, human sexuality, family dysfunction, psychology, sociology, behavior theory and trauma.
    2. Pass Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Curriculum by passing the written exam, attending the full duration of training, participating and passing the required role plays, and demonstrating the full competencies up to and including the holds required.
    3. Openness to multi-disciplinary and eclectic approaches to treatment.
    4. Core Expertise: Possesses skill, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential duties of their role; keeps knowledge up to date.
    5. Cultural Competency: Demonstrates awareness, sensitivity and skills in working professionally with diverse individuals, groups and communities who represent various cultural and personal background and characteristics.
    6. Interpersonal Communication: Communicates clearly using verbal, nonverbal, and written skills in a professional context; demonstrates clear understanding and use of professional language.
    7. Professional & Ethical Conduct: Adheres to professional values such as honesty, personal responsibility, and accountability; applies ethical concepts within scope of work and adheres to Agency policies and procedures.
    8. Collaboration & Teamwork: Functions effectively as a member of a professional team that includes employees, clients and family members.
    9. Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Recognizes problems and responds appropriately; gathers information and sorts through it to identify and address root cause issues; makes timely decisions.
  4. Experience: Combination of education, training and/or experience in working in adolescent behavioral health and/or congregate care.
AGENCY SUMMARY:
Applewood Centers is a private, nonprofit agency providing mental health services, social services and education to children, adolescents and families living in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. Dedicated to addressing a variety of behavioral, emotional and learning problems, we provide a continuum of care from outpatient counseling to residential treatment.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Residential Music Therapist is part of an interdisciplinary team of professionals who are expected to provide the highest caliber of instruction in individual and/or small group settings.  Increase client awareness and enhance their cognitive and language abilities through music therapy. Support the clients in the QRTP and PRTF in utilizing music and expressive arts to work through difficult feelings in a safe manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  1. Focus on improving a client’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being through music-based interventions.
  2. Enhance client communication, promote emotional expression, improve motor skills, and increase social interactions. Coordinate these goals with the interdisciplinary team.
  3. Maintain and oversee materials, equipment, and supplies specific to Music Therapy.
  4. Provide positive opportunities for clients that can translate to enhanced functioning and increased ability to gain from treatment services.
  5. Assist in the teaching and behavior management of the milieu by developing and implementing lesson plans and curriculum that are in line with therapeutic treatment goals and objectives. 
  6. Assist clinical teams in completing daily, weekly, and monthly communication forms and behavioral records.
  7. Care for children, including supervising children when on the milieu, during transitions, in group and classroom settings.
  8. Plan and organize 1:1 and group music therapy related activities consistent with the QRTP and PRTF models to optimize treatment goals.
  9. Instruct/train youth in socially acceptable alternatives to negative and destructive behavior.
  10. Protect youth from physical and emotional harm emanating from themselves, others, or the environment.
  11. Properly handle emergencies such as injury, runaway disruptive and aggressive outbursts.
  12. Teach and role model pro-social, mediation, and self-management skills.
  13. Develop trusting, positive relationships among youth and staff in the facility.
  14. Initiate and facilitate all necessary communication with members of the team.
  15. Contribute to the development and maintenance of the clinical record through the timely completion of assigned documentation in accordance with applicable licensing and accreditation regulations and standards.
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Attend staff meetings, treatment conferences and team meetings.
  2. Attend scheduled staff meetings, supervision, and on-going training.
  3. All required trainings, certifications and licensure must be kept current in accordance with applicable licensing and accreditation regulations and standards.
  4. Respect the privacy of clients and hold in confidence all information obtained during the client’s treatment.  All client-related documents should be handled in accordance with Agency guidelines on confidential material.
  5. Maintain high standards of ethical and professional conduct and adhere to Agency policies and procedures.
  6. As necessary, utilize Safety Care procedures, including at a minimum, make use of the necessary Two-Person Stability Hold.
  7. Other duties as assigned by management.
