The Museum Store Assistant supports the Museum Store Manager in the daily operations of the Museum Gift
Shop, providing excellent customer service and ensuring a welcoming, informative visitor experience. This is a
non-exempt position, generally scheduled 40 hours per week, with seasonal fluctuations (especially during
summer months). Dress code required.
Reports directly to the Museum Store Manager.
The primary role of the Akta Lakota Museum staff is to uphold the St. Joseph’s Indian School learning model by
fostering an appreciation for the history of the Lakota people and the vibrant arts and culture of the Lakota
communities.
1. Welcome and assist visitors by providing outstanding customer service and sharing general
information about St. Joseph’s Indian School, the museum, and outreach programs.
2. Maintain daily coverage of the museum store(s), ensuring the store is open, organized, clean, and
visually appealing.
3. Process retail transactions accurately using established cash-handling procedures (cash, credit/debit,
and receipts, as applicable).
4. Support merchandising efforts including stocking, pricing/labeling, displays, and general store
presentation.
5. Assist with inventory management including receiving, organizing, counting, and restocking
merchandise; report low-stock items and needs to the Museum Store Manager.
6. Assist with purchasing support as directed (e.g., assist with buying, preparing information for reorders,
organizing vendor materials).
7. Learn and support museum operations as needed to provide helpful, accurate information to guests
and contribute to a positive visitor experience.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Museum Store Manager.
• High School Diploma required.
• Customer service and/or retail experience required
• Strong customer service skills and ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of guests.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to handle cash sales, count money, and make accurate change.
• Basic computer skills and ability to learn point-of-sale (POS) and inventory systems.
• Reliable attendance and ability to follow policies, procedures, and dress code requirements.
• Repetitive use of hands/wrists for extended periods (cashiering, stocking, tagging).
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods and walk for extended periods (up to 4+ hours/day).
• Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds.
• Driving may be required.
• 40 hours per week, with seasonal variation.
• Must be available to work weekends and variable hours as scheduled.
