Under the direction of the Health, Safety & Environmental Manager, the Safety Specialist is responsible to inspect work areas and equipment to ensure compliance with company, state, and federal safety policies and regulations. This position will work to create and enforce a culture of safety within Barry Callebaut. Responsibilities also include documenting safety inspections, citing dangerous areas/procedures and recommending corrective procedures, and maintaining safety equipment supply and availability. Act as site contact for EHS related matters.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyze safety components and programs to ensure compliance with corporate policies
  • Maintain and report KPI lost time accidents, near miss and safety talks
  • Designing action plans for continuous improvements in KPI measures
  • Coordinate management systems to motivate and train employees for active participation in Safety and Environmental programs
  • Understand and keep current with OSHA and other governmental regulations
  • Communicating with other departments relating to Environmental, Safety and Health activities
  • Review subcontractor safety guidelines and practices to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory policies
  • Review PPE standards and establish engineering controls where feasible to supplement PPE effectiveness
  • Organize plant Safety Committee, review committee audits and findings, and implement recommendations as applicable
  • Maintain and develop fire prevention, alarm, and emergency response systems and plans
  • Review training programs for employees to ensure training certifications are adequate and current
  • Review new equipment installations for compliance with OSHA and environmental compliance
  • Coordinate LOTO and other pertinent maintenance procedures with Maintenance Manager for compliance
  • Verify testing by outside contractors of environmental, fire, and safety systems as required by permit and regulations.
  • Oversight of contractors on the job and to maintain safety (fire and security alarms).
  • Provide support to all employees
  • Supervises field safety compliance by ensuring the company is fulfilling labor safety policies as well as the policies of our customers.
  • Conducts safety classes such as Forklift Certification, as well as new hire safety orientations.
  • Inspect working conditions in manufacturing sites to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations
  • Perform safety audits, job hazard analysis, risk assessments and incident investigations
  • Advise and assist in the development and implementation of plans, policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure safety programs are aligned with company and site goals.
  • Collaborate with managers to monitor compliance and identify safety issues
  • Intervene in unsafe activities or operations
  • Facilitate implementation of safety programs and required EHS standards
  • Act as the site contact for safety related matters
  • Documents and maintain records of all incidents including near misses
  • Facilitate root cause analysis and action plan development for all recordable incidents
  • Conduct regular safety tours and safety talks and document attendance
  • Track the progress of action plans and provide updates to management team
  • Coordinate with HR to ensure required training is assigned and completed by employees
  • Perform all other related duties

About you:

  • Associate Degree in Occupational, Health & Safety sciences or other related fields or minimum of 3 years experience in an Environmental, Health and Safety position; Technical writing a plus
  • Over three years experience in the manufacturing environment; food manufacturing is a plus
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Experience in RCA’s or internal investigations
  • Computer skills in Microsoft and Google Suite
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards
  • OSHA 10hr Certification preferred
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs unassisted
  • Must be flexible to work off-shift hours when needed
